Setup guide

Build your setup

Deck, trucks, wheels and hardware: how to choose parts that work together for how you skate.

Four choices decide how a board rides

Work through the parts in this order. Each one affects the next. This is general guidance; we are happy to check a combination before you buy.

Deck

Deck width is the first decision. Narrower boards are quicker to flip and suit technical street skating; wider boards feel steadier for ramps, bowls and park. Shoe size and comfort matter too: if you are unsure, tell us your shoe size and how you skate.

Tip Beginners: a mid-range width is a safe start.

Trucks

Trucks should line up with the width of your deck, so the axle ends sit close to the edges. Too narrow and the board feels cramped; too wide and it gets hard to flip and grind.

Tip Match truck width to deck width.

Wheels

Wheel size is measured in millimetres. Smaller wheels stay light and close to the ground for street; larger wheels roll faster and cope better with rough ground. Hardness changes grip and slide.

Tip Think about your usual surface first.

Bearings & hardware

Bearings, bolts and grip tape hold the setup together. Check that bolt length suits your deck and risers, and keep bearings clean and dry so they keep rolling.

Tip Ask us if you are adding risers.

If you are buying a first board

Start with a balanced setup and add a helmet and pads. Tell us your age, height and where you will skate, and we will suggest something sensible.

If you are replacing parts

Note what you are riding now. Keeping deck and truck widths matched and changing one part at a time makes it easier to feel what works.

Setup questions, answered

What deck width should I choose?

It depends on how you skate and your shoe size. Narrower decks suit technical street skating, wider ones feel more stable for park and ramps. Send us the details and we will suggest a width.

Do trucks have to match my deck?

Yes, as a rule. Truck axle width should sit close to the edges of the deck so the board feels balanced.

Is a complete board a good first buy?

It can be, as long as the parts suit the rider. Ask us and we will check a setup before you order.

Can you check a setup I have put together?

Yes. Send us the parts you are considering through the contact page and we will tell you honestly if they work together.

Want a second opinion on your setup?

Tell us how you skate and what you are riding now. We will point you to the right setup.
